Just got off the phone with my mother.

Granpa Z. went to the hospital on Saturday. He was diagnosed with bleeding in his intestines, from non-cancerous polyps, which is something he's had trouble with before. They did some surgery, stopped the bleeding, and he went home.

He went back on Sunday, similar symptoms. They did surgery again - and he had a heart attack during surgery.

Right now he's in the hospital, recovering. He's in poor condition. Dad's going up there tomorrow.

::bites lip:: I was going to call and see how they were doing this weekend, and I put it off...

Mom said part of the problem is that he's been feeling really negative and down lately, as if he thinks his time's up. On the other hand, he'd also been asking Mom when she thought we might come visit, so he can meet his little namesake Jack. I told her to tell him, if/when he's able to talk, that I want him to hang in there so he can see his "Little Bernie". Gramma of course is extremely upset.

I'm praying for them. Prayers from the flist are very welcome.

Got a call from my eldest little brother. He'd been called by Mom, who had fresh news for him: Granpa's not conscious. He's 90. This is far from good.

He and our youngest brother, who he'd just called with the news, are making plans for obtaining leave when they need it.

I'm a little jealous. Odds are high I won't be able to go if and when something happens. Quite apart from the cost of a ticket, [livejournal.com profile] davner would need to take leave and watch the kids here for a couple days. Or, Dav take leave, the four of us make a two day trip each way, stay in a hotel, and Dav stay behind with the kids at the hotel while I attend services... No, that's even more expensive, and a logistical nightmare to boot.

Damn it.

Still praying.
