Harry Potter fandom post
Aug. 16th, 2005 09:11 amNo spoiler cuts shall be occuring, because a) I haven't read Half-Blood Prince yet, due to lack of funds, and b)the only "spoiler" occuring will be a reference to a couple pairings in the book which by now even I, a determined avoider of spoilers, have been unable to avoid learning. No information about *how* any such pairings are achieved will be contained herein, if at all possible. Oh, and for the record, I'm stubbornly refusing to do any of the fandom acronyms or name ellisions. :p They're confusing for newbies and outsiders, and the ellisions in particular just make us all look like twits. (Sidenote: I reserve a special place in the acid-dipped pointy depths of my personal [non-existant] torture chamber for whomever came up with 'Snupin'. Both because the name is laughable as hell, and because... EEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWW!!!! What kind of sick deviant pairs THOSE two up?!)
So. Hermione/Ron is now official. I was kinda rooting for Hermione/Victor Krum ::impish grin::, but this pairing works for me. There's been plenty of lead-up to it throughout the books. And they're cute together.
Apparently there's a HUGE, and I cannot emphasize this enough, HUGE segment of the fanbase that a) worships Hermione/Harry, and b) is rabidly, vitriolically, insanely CONSUMED with hatred for even the suggestion that she might be paired with Ron. (Nevermind that there's not been any real hint of Harry and Hermione liking each other "that way" since the first book, and even then it was scarcely discernable to the naked eye.) Since HBP was released, they have gone into paroxysms of fury and despair.
Seriously. This is why I seldom tiptoe into fandom. These people are crazier than me when I go into an angry-flail about the lack of resolution between O'Neill and Carter on SG-1, and that's really saying something.
Apparently, Harry is now officially paired with Ginny. Better than Cho Chang, which never made much sense to me; better than Luna Lovejoy, whom I was rather afraid JKR was setting up to be Harry's consolation post-Cho.... And there's been a little buildup in the form of Ginny's former crush on him... But......
Isn't Ginny about five or six years younger than Harry?!
And isn't Harry 17 or 18 by now?!
Forget all the whining from the Hermione+Harry=FourEVAR! people about how there's been no proper development of the romance for Harry+Ginny to be valid.
Ginny is way too damn young to be snogging an upper-classman like Harry! What is this, Japan?! "Oh, Potter-sempai, we mustn't.... ::swoon:: "
Where are her brothers?! And their beating sticks?! Where are Fred and George's permanent disfigurement and crippling charms, adapted from their Weaselly's Wheezes inventory?!
This is like the age difference between my kawaii-as-hell 16 year old sister and any of my brother Jerry's shipmates. I *know* that Jerry and my other two brothers would form a posse and administer a thorough beatdown if any of Jer's shipmates so much as whistled at her, and Brian doesn't even like our sister!
Where are her parents? ::huffs:: I doubt Molly Weaselly would be quite so fond of Harry if she knew he was molesting her baby girl.
JKR is on crack.
But her fandom is on crack, cocaine, and absinthe.
Damn, I need to read HBP. ::plots for next payday::
Edited to correct for embarassing lapse of fan-memory. ::hangs head in shame:: I still think her horde of elder brothers need to give Harry a little 'lesson' in what is and is not acceptable behavior towards their babys ister. Partly because that's what big brothers are supposed to do. Partly because the idea makes me giggle. ^_^

Date: 2005-08-16 02:36 pm (UTC)Ok. Major part of my rant is hereby rendered invalid. It's been too long since I read them all.
The impression I got, though, from my memories, was that she was really really young.
And the point about a rabid fraternal posse still stands. Ginny is the baby sister of, let's see..... Brother Who Works at Gringotts, Brother Who Studies Dragons, Percy the Prat, Fred, George, and Ron.
So six elder brothers who, at least where I'm from, would be heavily overprotective.
