May. 19th, 2005 10:51 amI'd heard rumors of Bill O'Reilly's rather... antiquated... notions of how the Star Wars fandom is all-male because 'Gurrls like movies about "real" things, not fantasy' on various LJ accounts. Last night I watched O'Reilly Factor and saw this drivel for the first time.
Apparently, Revenge of the Sith cannot possibly be a big box-office hit because it doesn't appeal to women the way Titanic did, and therefore, no matter how many times the male fans watch it over and over, it will never achieve 'number one movie of all time' status.
He had a great many other things to say about women and the SW fanbase which sent me into a massive feminist rage. What sort of women does he spend time with during his off-hours?
He also had a lot of nonsense to say about how the plot points about the evil Empire trying to overthrow a democracy were 'heavy-handed' and seemed to be Bush-bashing. Clearly the man never watched the original movies and has no freaking clue that George Lucas alleges to have written all six movie scripts together in the 1970's. (I have a feeling the prequels were NOT written back then, but even so, the evil Galactic Empire, and the democratic Republic it crushed a generation ago, are part of the original movies.) As my husband
davner pointed out, that means if anything, the Empire is a commentary on Richard Nixon.
I am hereby starting up a meme. Please pass it around widely.
If you are a woman, and enjoy Star Wars, e-mail the following to oreilly@foxnews.com
I am a woman. I love Star Wars.
(Choose one) I plan to see the movie at least once. If I do not see the movie more than once, it is because George Lucas screwed up his greatest creation, not because I dislike fantasy films.
(or) I do not plan to see the movie, because I feel George Lucas screwed up his greatest creation and I refuse to give the man any more money in return for ruining a classic film series. I love fantasy films and plan to watch more in the future, provided they are done well.
Sincerely, (Name)
