Extremely random, post-midnight-state-of-mind induced post. You have been warned.

I'm starting to think that, in the Stargate tv-verse, getting reccommended by Colonel O'Neill for a command slot is a lot like being issued a red shirt for a Star Trek away mission.

Early on in Season one, you have poor Kowalski, one of the few chars from the original movie team to Abydos who made the transit to the tv series. Nice lil military buddy scene at a briefing wherein Kowalski finds out O'Neill suggested he get one of the subsidiary teams, and Jack mutters gruffly "I had a moment of weakness". His first mission, he gets a Goul'D infesting his poor soon-to-be corpse, and an episode or two later dies as a result of half his head being sliced off by an active Gate.

Then you have the episode Dav and I watched tonight. Major Brady (Brody? I forget), who was placed in command of one of the lesser SG teams partly on O'Neill's good word, on his very first mission goes to a planet in a binary star system, which shortly thereafter develops a nasty case of black holes, and ends up dying a rather nasty death along with his entire team. When Star Gate Command tries to find out what's going on over there, the Gate gets locked open and the black hole's gravitic and temporal distortions start affecting the interior of Cheyenne Mountain. Much probably junk-science blathering ensues, along with slow motion shots of the Major and his team looking scared shitless as the black hole enlarges in the background of the MOLP's vid feed.

Are there other examples of this? My SG1-fu is weaker than I'd like. Two doomed commanders does not a trend make.
