Sep. 7th, 2010 10:34 pmFinally got Livejournal to work earlier. ^_^ V
Zodlings are in bed. Laundry is spooling up in the appropriate machines. Dishes are done.
Only thing left is working on getting my toes wet with the online class. Unfortunately I'm running into issues with printing the syllabus and first module. Part of it is this printer's typical issues with blank pages sticking together and some color imagery not printing clearly. Part seems to be browser cross-compatibility issues. The so-called "printable version" of the syllabus, upon print preview, shows only one page, out of what's a huge multi-page document when clicked on section by section. And it doesn't even show the whole page. A test print proved this is not an error on the part of print preview, but how the printer perceives the document. Sigh.
But I'm working on it. Hopefully I can either start a little of my first assignment tonight, or get up early tomorrow and work on it before Zodlings rouse.
Edit: Ah. First assignment is to get into the message board and contribute to the required discussion on how you see the future of libraries, and to reply to a comment made by another student whom you either agree or disagree with, and think about how that is sharpening or altering your opinion.
Edit of edit: Oooh, and we have our first "failure to check one's economic privilege at the door", in the shape of someone who says he thinks the future of libraries is to diminish and fade, because he's never used one, or felt the need to use one when he sought privacy and quiet to do work. No, he just waits til his house or office are empty, and does his work then.
Yeah, that SO would not have worked for me back when I was in a brick and mortar college. I was living at home with both parents, a cat, and five younger siblings in a very cramped apartment. Also, not everyone can afford the internet, which is what he thinks will take over the role of libraries. (What about children's programs? And public speakers? And community outreach? And the expertise of a trained reference librarian vs. an average person who just wants to figure out where to look for something and depart with the book?)
I will not start a flame war on my first day, I will not start a flame war on my first day, I will not start a flame war on my first day...
