Season opener of 70's Show was last night. ^_^ V It was good, but I had a few questions.
1. Why did those bastards in the casting dept. replace the actress who played Laurie Foreman? I love to hate her character. But I am upset that they replaced the actress. The old one was magnificent at being a trashy, devious, spoiled little slut. The new one's... ok.... certainly does the 'post-high school blonde bombshell with loose morals' part of the role well enough. But she doesn't seem to pull off the full sluttiness of a character who's bounced out of more beds than any five Las Vegas street corner hos. Nor does she appear to come close to the supreme confidence and deathly craftiness that lets Laurie get away with so much without giving Daddy Dear the slightest reason to question his mental image of her as his demure, perfect daughter. I mean, come on, Laurie's pulled off some stunts that rival Xellos for manipulation skill. It takes an actress with the right abilities and face to pull that off. Not just any polished blonde suburb brat will do.
2. Why is Kitty going so crazy trying to keep the household together after Red's heart attack?
Yes, Eric is leaving for college. Yes, Red isn't supposed to work for a few months, or do anything strenous, such as household chores - not that he did those before the stroke, he probably thought it was purely her job. Yes, Laurie is useless around the house.
But now they have Fez. With the residency permission he now has from marrying Laurie he should be able to get a job. His status is tentative in nature til the INS gets done processing all the paperwork and making sure this isn't a fake marriage - although it *is*fake. :p But it ought to be enough for him to find work. Even a part time job would enable him to pay for his food and Laurie's, and maybe even part of the rent. Then Kitty won't need to pull double shifts at the hospital to pay the bills.
Heck, the man had enough money to send Laurie and her "chaperone" on a trip to Cancun. ::snicker:: He can afford to contribute money to his in-laws.
He can also help with the chores so Kitty isn't forced to do five loads of laundry at midnight after she's already done a 12 hour shift. "Wherever he's from" seems to be a country where people believe strongly in helping the extended family, to judge by comments he's made in previous seasons about his native customs. This should be natural to him.
For that matter, if he got a full time job, he and Laurie could move out, and then Kitty's worries about bills and laundry would be seriously reduced.
3. What was up with Kitty assuming Red's heart attack meant Eric would not go to Madison?
It's becoming increasingly clear the Foremans senior will not have a retirement package to keep them solvent. Layrie's useless, and Fez may decide citizenship wsn't worth beign married to a flagrant slut. They *need* Eric to get a degree and a good job.
My feelings would be different if Kitty had no job, or if Red were in need of constant care.
Also, Eric needs to go to Madison for his own sanity's sake. I find it hard to understand why Kitty would want him to stay there when he gets nothing but abuse from Red and Laurie and his girlfriend will be leaving soon, with or without him. :;sigh:: Kitty's usually more compassionate than that.
4. I want to smack Hyde.
Jackie was being a manipulative little piece of work when she kept him and Kelso dangling all summer about her choice between them. But *day-yamn*.... Listening to her tell him he was her choice... kissing her like that not once, but *twice*... and still not saying a word until his new date showed up at the basement door. He had every right and reason to refuse to wait for her and move on. But he lowered himself to her level when he didn't tell her right away he'd gotten sick of it and was dating other people. He lowered himself a bit more when he didn't tell her it was too late the minuted she made that little declaration.
I don't feel too bad about Jackie's feelings. I never much liked her. I thought her romance with Hyde was one of the worst storylines in the show. And I was appalled at the way she was keeping the two guys dangling so long. But that's still no way for any man to act.
5. The more I see of Kelso, the more I fail to understand why Ashton Kutcher seems tobe the cast member whose acting career outside of the show is doing the best. Hollywood is full of actors whose talents consist of good cheekbones and the ability to memorize their lines without too much trouble. But why he should be getting so *many* movies in the last couple years, with only his dumb prettyboy persona going for him, escapes me. The rest of the cast outshines him so much. Topher Grace, the guy who plays Hyde, Kitty, Donna, and even Red are very good actors, and deserve a career after the show's run is over. They deserve it much more than Kelso. ::sneer:: I like the guy who plays Fez, and the girl who plays Jackie is decent too. But their roles just haven't given their abilities the chance to really catch my eye.
Ok, on to Kid Notorious.
Where to start? ^___^ When I first saw the commercials for this show, I thought it was going to be terrible. Sort of a mix between that dreadful James Bond Jr. cartoon from a few years back, and the animation style of M.C. hammer's shortlived cartoon show. But it's fan-fucking-TAStic! There's a few, very few, bits here and there that make me cringe. But overall this show sparkles. Puss-puss is the cutest and evilest thing I have seen in a long time. ^_^ "English" is a great example of the classic British manservant without being a total cliche, and he gets great lines. Tollie Mae could use a little work, but she's very funny. Kid is a great, sleazy, womanizing, manipulative producer type who's better with a quick line of bullshit than anyone has a right to be.
Last night's episode was hilarious. Kid toting a small yak under one arm while clinging to a pink helicopter with the other... Puss in an oversized Russian-style fur hat and little fur booties, frolicing up a glacial mountainside.... too kawaii.... English, trudging up the same mountainside, getting stuck in the snow, and having Puss perform yet another demeaning act upon him, merely responds with a long suffering sigh and "OH, the frozen indignity of it all..."
I love this show. It's worth watching South Park with Tom during the previous half hour in order to see this.
Alas, I have spent enough time effusing about television. I need to get started on my packing, very badly. Most of my stuff may already be at Steph's house, but there's stuff I still have which realyl must come along. The sooner it's done, the better. I want every scrap of free time I can spare for snuggling Tom before I go. ;_; I am going to miss that man more than he realizes.
