Zodlings report
Aug. 28th, 2008 10:39 amWe've been a bit concerned about Mark's very, very scant vocabulary and willingness to talk, so yesterday I called Tricare to see about getting an appt. with his primary care provider. Dr. Glodt didn't have any openings until Oct. 1st, but the lady offered me an appt. this morning, with Dr. Heinz, so I grabbed it.
Dr. Heinz said that, while Mark's physical and behavioral development seem fairly normal, most children by eighteen months have acquired four or five words. Mark does seem quite responsive to sound, but Dr H feels he may not have the acuity of hearing he needs, and in any event a specialist is better equipped to make that determination. So he's referring Mark to an audiologist and a speech therapist; we can try calling tomorrow afternoon, or if the referrals aren't through the system yet, try again Tuesday. (Oh, and his own son, who's close to Mark's age, also does the 'stare at ceiling while running full tilt through the house' thing. ^_^ He says it's normal. Goofy, and trying to a parent's nerves, but normal.)
He also prescribed Mark some Zyrtec, because Mark has some mild fluid pressure in his ears, although he doesn't currently have an ear infection. The fluid's a good breeding ground for infection, though, so the Zyrtec is to clear it out. He'll need it daily for six weeks. I didn't pick it up yet because he was being a little monster. I'll try and take them out to base this afternoon and get it then.
We're to take Mark back in about a month for a followup, to see how the Zyrtec's working and discuss what the specialists have to say. He hopes we'll have been able to get Mark in to at least one if not both of them. I'm less confident of that, given the time it usually takes to squeeze into a specialist's schedule, but we'll see. Dr. H says the audiologist should be here at Langley; he's uncertain about the speech therapist, but thinks it might be here too. If not.... well, I guess I'll have to work on my freeway driving skills sooner than I thought. o_o;;
Jack's fine. Managed to roll over onto his tummy *again* in the bassinet last night, when Dav stuck him up there while I was giving Mark a bath. The combo of breastmilk and formula seems to be agreeing with him. He makes massive poops about every other day, and has produced enough wet a few times to leak through to his clothing. He seems slightly plumper, and quite vigorous. His cry is back to normal, although he occasionally gets a little hoarse if he's left in the bassinet too long because I'm busy getting Mark ready for bed. While I was at my post-partum checkup yesterday,
davner took them to his office, and Jack was severely cooed over and admired by the entire staff. ^____^ Right now he's flailing his little limbs about in the playpen, squalling that Mommy dared to think he was sleeping soundly enough to stop holding him. Definitely got the Doscher temper. ^____^

Date: 2008-09-02 04:18 pm (UTC)I do think the lack of contact with other kids might be involved, but I'd rather get cracking on the problem now. Besides, Tricare will cover the costs for us.
We also arranged a playdate with Tom's co-worker Elaine and her boy Ian, who's just about Mark's age. It was fun, but also worrisome. Ian is *quite* talkative. We'll probably have more playdates with them in the future. I liked Elaine, and the boys got along about as well as toddlers ever do. I'm going to try and see if there's a storytime at the base library, too.
