State of the Sethra and the Zodlings
Jan. 11th, 2011 01:06 pmHow did I miss my own Congressperson submitting legislation to defund NPR and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting last week?!
Not that I am surprised by the news, as I am smack in the middle of one of the most conservative Congressional districts in Colorado. I just would have been faster on the outrage ball, and sent him an email much sooner.

Have decided to forego the lengthy rant about why Mark nearly got sent to the R. Lee Ermey Memorial Preschool (Yes I know he's still alive) this past weekend. Short version, we solved the problems temporarily by cutting the feet off of his full length pajamas and putting them on backwards. It looks silly, but it works, and it saves us from needing to do emergency decontamination every. damn. morning. and. naptime.
I talked to his ABA team leader yesterday, and we're tentatively looking at January 29th for our all-day intensive effort on potty-training. After that, if it works, they'll set us up with some tools for over night potty-training to use on our own. I suspect it won't be taken care of in one day-long session, but at least it's the first step toward long-term progress on his less-salubrious issues.

Jack's been working on food therapy, once a week with Ms. Olivia, and a modified effort at home with us.
One of her suggestions for her weekly session was sliced boiled circles of jicama. I had never actually seen one, and they were a little hard to find. Contrary to her description of 'a cross between a potato and an onion', they look more like albino turnips. Unfortunately, we bought it on Sunday, and by this morning when I was getting ready to cook it, it was already moldy. I substituted potato instead. Overcooked it a bit; the slices crumbled a bit during the boiling process, and tasted watery. Didn't matter, as he flatout snubbed the potato, regardless of how it was presented.Next week we'll buy a jicama t6he day before therapy. I hope it handles boiling better than the potato slices.
He adored the Veggie Straws, so much so that he ate them even when coated liberally in apple sauce. Wouldn't eat straight up applesauce, just when coating the straws or his beloved ritz veggie crackers. We snuck in a couple scraps of plain grilled chicken, stuffed into the ends of veggie straws... he ate the first one without noticing, just looking cross and confused. Second one, he started biting the straws in the middle, away from the chicken, and refused to eat the discarded ends. Clever little zodling.
We also snuck some thin sliced turkey past his radar, by putting it on a ritz and coating it liberally in applesauce. He didn't notice until it was in his mouth, when he again looked cross and confused. Didn't gag or try to spit it out, as he does when Dav and I manage to squeeze a scrap of food past his protesting lips openly.
Wouldn't touch the provolone or the noodles. Not even coated in applesauce.
For a beginning effort, it went pretty well. I need to hose him down, as he twirled food-covered fingers in his hair multiple times. He now smells like a restaurant that caters to toddlers and looks like a Final Fantasy character.

My next class at UMUC is Advanced Writing, and starts in March. Due to the upheaval in November and December, by the time I got around to registering, all the earlier class sections for that course were full.
I'm mildly disappointed, but the section will be done before Mark's school year, so I'll have enough time and energy to do the work. And Davner happens to be taking the same class, but got into an earlier section, because he registered before said upheaval. So I can use his textbooks, instead of shelling out extra money for a slightly altered new edition of The Bedford Handbook. (We already have two editions, because of UMUC 's English Department changing texts between semesters.)
Not planning on any math or law courses til the fall 2012 semester, when Mark starts full-day kindergarten. Just going to work my way down the GER requirements unless suggested otherwise by my advisor, until Mark's in school fulltime. Not going to be able to take a full course load until they're both in school full-time, which won't be for about two years. (I am still astonished that Jack will be three this summer, and starting preschool this fall.)

Making moderately decent progress on my workout regimen, but still in pitiful shape for a woman who's under 35. Cardio in particular is kicking my ass. Gah. At least the Dancing with The Stars Latin Cardio is a lot of fun, so I'm having an easier time sticking with it, within my physical limits.
