Dear Fellow Dems thinking of Defection to McCain: You Are Dumb.

What in the name of little baby donkeys makes you think it could possibly be a good idea to vote for John McCain if your chosen Holy Grail doesn't win the Democratic Party's nomination? Are you all pants-on-head-retarded?

Let's review a few things here. Some you'd know if you bothered looking at the website of this supposed liberal Republican you're thinking about voting for in protest. Some you'd only know if you know my husband, he of the highly conservative politics and decidedly evil sense of humor.

"Oh, he's really a liberal maverick! He may not be perfect, but he's sooooo much more liberal than (insert name of hated alternative Dem. candidate."

No. No, he is not. At the very least, if you are the slightest concerned with feminism and women's reproductive rights, you cannot possibly choose this man. I don't advocate single-issue voting, but this is bad. Crossing the proton beams bad, people.

Read the man's website. Human Dignity and the Sanctity of Life The money quote is right at the top: "John McCain believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned, and as president he will nominate judges who understand that courts should not be in the business of legislating from the bench. Constitutional balance would be restored by the reversal of Roe v. Wade, returning the abortion question to the individual states. The difficult issue of abortion should not be decided by judicial fiat." (Bolding mine)

We are going to choose a president who has the power to select justices that will either maintain R V. W status quo, or overturn it. ([livejournal.com profile] davner tried to persuade me that nobody's going to ever seriously challange the case before the Supreme Court, not in the near future anyway. He evidently hasn't heard about some of the more conservative states that are passing abortion restrictions that expressly violate Roe, in order to mount a challange and overturn it. He probably wouldn't see this as a bad thing if he had heard; he thinks Roe is bad law because he backs states' rights over federal rights, the same reasons McCain does, despite being personally pro-choice, but I digress.)

Then there's the total failure of logic involved in McCain saying he wishes to choose justices who will decide by judicial fiat an issue than he doesn't want to be decided by judicial fiat. Evidently it's only judicial activism when it doesn't go his way... I like my presidents to have a slight nodding acquaintance with logic.

I repeat, we are going to indirectly choose the next Supreme Court justices. This is important. Much more important than pouting over your fellow Dems deciding they like the other candidate better.

On nearly every issue, while he may be considered more liberal on some points than Hillary, John McCain cannot by any definition be considered a liberal, or even a moderate.

Stop being dumb. I know it's a basic human drive, almost as basic as procreation, but please, people. Resist.

Because when we as a party make the man I love more than life itself chortle as much as he did yesterday, when he and I discussed that poll about the number of Dems willing to defect should their candidate not get nominated - WE ARE DOING SOMETHING WRONG.

This is a man who, back in 2004, compared the then-nine Democrat contenders to the Nine Ringwraiths of Sauron, and Howard Dean to the Witchking of Angmar.

A man whose delight was positively unwholesome when Dean had that little "YEEEEAAARRRGGHHHH!!!" moment all over national media.

Yesterday he all but rubbed his hands together and purred "Exxxceeelllent, Smithers!".

I repeat, this means WE ARE DOING SOMETHING WRONG.

Knock it off. Grow a pair of ovaries (or balls) and act like grownups. Don't hand the Oval Office over to a Republican because you want to pout. Please, people.

Sincerely, Sethra
