Adventures in sippy cups
Dec. 5th, 2007 04:26 pmBegan my second attempt to teach the Zodling how to drink from a sippy cup. This time I used one that wasn't guaranteed spill proof. He'd had so much trouble getting anything out of the spillproofs that I'd given up entirely for a while.
A non-spillproof did indeed prove easier for him to get milk from, but it does have its pitfalls. For one thing, Mark-chan sometimes likes to turn his bottle upside down and gnaw on the bottom. The bottle's nipple doesn't dribble when he does this. The new sippy cup does. ^_^;; He also kept trying to turn it sideways so he could examine the Backyardigans cavorting on the side of the cup. Depending on which way the spout was pointed, this proved messy. And then there were the attempts to hold the spout upside down and drink. The liquid covered the tiny air hole opposite the spout, and couldn't reach the spout itself. This frustrated him a great deal, but he was still noisily ungrateful when I showed him which was the cup should go. "Mommy! Don't take that out of my mouth! Don't pivot it inside my mouth either! I was drinking from thaaaattt!"
It was also easier to get him to try more than one or two sips than with the spillproof cup. He did stare at it and then at me very dubiously, and attempt to shove it away, several times. But Mommy was persistent, and he eventually figured out that yes, milk could come from this weird thing too. Biggest problem so far is getting him to realize he has to take a sip, then tilt the cup away and swallow, before tipping it back so the milk can flow. His bottle nipples had a slower flow. There was a certain amount of coughing and half-choking every so often. >_< And a lot of long pauses while he watched his Backyardigans dvd - the sippy cup's shorter and wider than his bottles, so he can't drink and see around the cup to the tv at the same time. But he finished all but half an ounce, eventually.
Score one for Mommy. ^_^ V I hope it continues this well. Tomorrow I'll have to backslide and bring a bottle along to my prenatal appt.; but aside from trips like that, I think we may go sippy-cup-only from now on.
