Mark's introduction to whole milk did not go quite as well as I'd hoped.

I decided to give it to him as part of his afternoon meal, when he'd have solid food already in his stomach, and when he generally gets a small bottle, to minimize any ill effects.

Usually the 2pm meal includes four oz of soy formula. I poured five oz of whole milk into one of his Medela bottles, since I didn't have to worry about giving the powder enough room to slosh about as I mixed it.

In the past, Mark-chan has made it clear he does NOT like cold food or drink. Leftover baby food that was in the fridge? Better make sure it's reached room temp., Mommy! Formula fresh-mixed with bottled water just bought from a gas station cooler? Better think again, Momma!

This time, after barely an ounce, he went into full blown lolcats "DO NOT WANT!" mixed with Stewie Griffin "Damn you vile woman!". It would have been funnier if I were a bystander. >_< I persevered, and eventually he finished all five ounces, protesting less and less, but still not happy. Ohhhhhhh, so not happy.

If that had been all, I would have counted it a partial victory and simply waited a few days before trying again, to make sure he didn't develop diarrhea or break out in purple spots or somesuch.

In less than an hour, he started sniffling like mad. Clear mucus dribbled out of his nose. He started squalling and snuffling and sneezing and rubbing his eyes, and clung like a small gooey barnacle. Squalled louder every time I wiped his nose. It neever got clogged enough for me to break out the nasal aspirator, but there were mass quantities of nasty nasty clear mucus. Best of all, he sneezed a gooey wad the size of a Sacagawea coin all over my shirt. >_< I cooed and soothed as best I could. It got worse and worse for about an hour, and then gradually the mucus dried up and his face got less red. Took longer for him to calm down and for the eye rubbing to stop, but he did seem to feel noticeably better by the end of two hours.

We're going to his ped. later today anyway, because of the trouble he seems to have swallowing cereal and such. Same ped. who said I really needed to start trying whole milk. I am going to tell him what happened, and see what he says. Certainly sounds like some type of allergic reaction to me.

Trying him on more solid veggies worked better. A couple days ago, after he'd already had his dinner, we were eating chicken and steamed veggies. Towards the end of the meal, when the veggies had mostly cooled, [livejournal.com profile] davner suggested I try giving him some. He seemed puzzled at first - "Mommy's letting me eat bits of things on my tray?! She never lets me eat stuff off the floor!" - but ate them with very little trouble. I'm pleased to say he likes broccoli, cauliflower, and carrot chunks. Will do so again tonight.

Not-quite-toddlers can certainly be an adventure. ^_^
