Herein are contained most of the photos taken at my little world-ruler-in-the-making's first birthday. :D The ones of his little friend William and William's mommy are not included, because I want to get this post up tonight and I haven't asked her permission to show photos of them. Shame about that; William's awfully cute. A few more that are rather dimly lit are also excluded.

Blue one's from William and Monika; red ones are from me and Dav.

Despite appearances, that's a two layer cake. >_< It tasted fine; just came out kinda flat.

Mark being uncertain he likes his hat, despite it having the Backyardigans on it.

The rest of these are quite funny. Watching him in action was pure comedy gold. The red quasigoop he's not-eating is poorly coagulated strawberry Jello, chosen by me for the boys as the best compromise between Mark's food allergies and the boys' still limited ability to eat solids.

Why is it poorly coagulated? Well, in a fit of ambition, we decided to make the Jello in a bundt cake pan instead of just a simple square cake pan. (We expected more than just Monika and William to show up, so we also thought there might be more people eating it and the cake.) It would have looked really lovely - if it had worked.

When the time came to loosen the Jello ring from the bundt pan, we couldn't use our giant green bowl to soak it in, as originally planned, because it was taken up by potato salad. Dav suggested we try the sink. He filled it partway with warm water, put the bundt pan in, and I left the kitchen to continue attending to our guests and son. Unfortunately, I neglected to tell him that the pan should rest in the water only a few minutes. By the time I thought to check on how things were going, half an hour had passed.

Yeah. >_< Not one of my more shining moments. The upper third of the bundt pan was filled with strawberry liquid. The rest was... well... you'll see.

Yeah, I know, they need to be flipped. Will fiddle with that later, mostly for Debbie's benefit. I doubt if anyone else will have even continued looking this far down the list. Only a gramma can be interested in this many photos of a baby eating Jello. ^_^

I might note, William, who is several months younger than Marcus, displayed excellent table manners throughout his first encounter with Jello. Marcus refused to accept any from the spoon when I tried to offer it. Goofy little boy. ^_^

That's pretty much it. I wish I'd gotten some shots of the boys playing together. It was really cute. And I wish the photo of the balloons and streamers I did around the window had come out better. That'll teach me to not check the menu after taking a shot, even if it looked ok in the viewfinder beforehand.
