Today I found out that the state of Virginia, in its infinite wisdom, has a law forbidding apartment dwellers from having live Christmas trees in their apartments, on the grounds that it is a fire hazard. Why it isn't also a firehazard for persons who own their own homes, I cannot grasp.

::growl snarl, grumblemutter::

Thank God we found out before we bought one; my co-workers tell me that if caught, the state fines you $500, and it's legal grounds for landlords to evict as well.

::very small voice:: I was really looking forward to a live tree...

Or maybe not. It's not terribly clear.

Thanks for the link, Duck. My co-worker was telling me that in Newport News, where our apartment is, it's definitely illegal; and that link, on initial perusal, does seem to indicate that local governments have power to make the law more restrictive if they so choose. I'll have to look into it further.

Darn grinchy lawmakers...

Newport News? No kidding? I used to live in Newport News.

(Like, over thirty years ago...)
