::poings:: And now for something more closely approximating a real update.

During the course of tooling around town on a rare joint weekend off, Dav and I stopped by the local PetsMart to ogle the rescue kitties being displayed for adoption by the local humane societies. (Yes, societies plural. We have a remarkable number of small governmental subdivisions for an area of this size and population, and apparently they all have their own humane societies. This week's was Isle of Wight County Humane Society. )

Normally we just ogle, and pet, and chat with the nice volunteers who foster the kitties and pups so they're ready for adoption.

But this time we met a sweetheart of a one year old female, white with a generous helping of black markings, who'd just been surrendered by her former owners a day or two previously. Apparently they were moving somewhere that couldn't have cats. (Bastards...) Unoriginal, too. They'd named her Spot.

Well, after petting her, taking her out of the cage for snuggles, and chatting with her fosterer, Dav and I looked at each other. "Cat or gun?" "Cat!!! ::glee::"

(We'd originally agreed that Dav would buy me a .22 long-rifle as part of my anniversary gift, so I can take something out to the shooting range to practice with that doesn't knock me over. Yes, I realize my street cred as a pacifist is in sad forlorn tatters....)

Her new name is Amara. :D She's been cleared by the Isle of Wight HS vets for distemper, feline HIV and leukemia, ear mites, rabies, etc., and been fixed. She's allergic to corn, so we have to get her, and by extension Callisto, a particular kind of dry kibble. She's absolutely sweet and adorable - when her new 'brother' isn't around.

For what I had feared in acquiring a second kitty has indeed proven true. Right now, they can't *stand* each other ::sigh:: There has been much hissing and yowling, a great deal of feline gunfighter-style stare-down contests, and periodic pounce-tumble-let's make-the humans-think we're-killing each-other fights. Right before I got online this afternoon, Callisto decided he was going to come snuggle Mommy as she lay down reading a book, something he hadn't done since Amara came home. All was cute and fuzzy. Then Amara wandered in. And the two morons decided to have another of their tussles on top of Mommy. This was not cool. Oh, no, my precious. I scrambled out of the way hurriedly and yelled at them both to knock it off. Didn't work. The fight ended when Amara got wedged into the gap between the bed and the wall and I had to shove the matress aside to free her.

Yeah, we named her well when we settled on Amara. ^_^; Sweet cat, but a total vaporbrain. Last night Dav caught her hissing at various spots under the table, certain that Callisto was hiding under there in wait for her - when Callisto had already strolled out into the living room. He was probably laughing up his paw at her the whole time. Keep in mind, our table isn't so big that a cat Callisto's size could really have hidden very well from her.

When they're in separate rooms, they're both being fairly sweet. Amara in particular has gotten bolder today about jumping up on things and being adorably inquisitive. She honored me with the first nose-kiss. ::glee:: Don't know if she's nose-kissed Dav yet. Callisto seems a bit miffed that we brought home a new cat with whom he must share attention and kibble. He tends to be really stupid and get up in her personal space, even when she's yowling and has her ears flattened at him. But no one's been bitten, and no one's lost an eye, which Dav's been obsessed about. So, hopefully it'll all settle out eventually.

I certainly hope it settles by the time he leaves for deer camp, because if it doesn't, that's going to be a looooong ten days. They've been poinging at each other a LOT today.

Last couple-three days my friends-list set up has been all wonky. If it doesn't revert to normal by the weekend I may have to try e-mailing Support.

I hope they learn to get along soon. I love pets. I want to get one myself, but... not a good time.
Any pictures of them?
