Zodling Plague Update
Oct. 25th, 2010 11:22 amThe Zodlings both developed nasty colds over the weekend. Jack's still in the snuffly, slightly cross, slightly heavy-lidded stage. Mark was so bad yesterday that he was producing bright green mucus like a tiny faucet, coughing, and slowly lost all semblence of appetite; he only ate half of his chicken at lunch.
As you all know, Mark holds french fries in the same slightly religious esteem that denizens of Fraggle Rock reserve for radishes. Dinner yesterday was turkey hot dogs, vegetarian Mark-safe chili, and french fries. Normally he snarfs down the fries, pausing only to chug down soy milk and apple juice, then spends the rest of the meal poking the hot dogs and bun with a dubious finger. The chili doesn't even merit being poked.
Last night? He didn't even poke the french fries. Not a single one. And he barely sipped the soy milk. We tried giving him straight apple juice, instead of the usual half-and half of water/juice, to get him to hydrate and to get his daily dose of Zyrtec in. He had to be really nudged to finish. ;_; We tried his beloved tomato triscuits, which he loves the way hobbits (and his parents) love mushrooms. He only ate one, and he did so very slowly.
Sent him to bed early, decided to call Tricare in the morning and keep him home from school.
Jack wasn't quite as bad, and for once he actually ate more of dinner than Mark. But he was getting lethargic and runny-nosed, and we decided to cancel today's in-home therapy appts.
We didn't get to see Dr. Flather, but the nice young Lt. we got instead did a fine job getting Mark to comply with most of the exam. His diagnosis is that Mark and Jack both have a viral nasal infection. Mark is now old enough for OTC mucinex or sudafed, which I plan to get at the Comm. after lunch. Jack's still too young for decongestants, but the Lt. suggested we try a small amount of honey at bedtime to soothe his cough.
Mark has been extremely unhappy all morning that I won't let him out to play. And he was very very upset when the bus pulled up outside and I went out to talk to the driver without him. (Didn't have the bus company number to call him in sick, and the school doesn't handle that for parents. Will get the number from the driver tomorrow.) Poor kiddo. I don't want him getting sicker or infecting the other kids, though.
Jack on the other hand clearly doesn't mind being inside all day at all. ^_^ So far, no green gunk, and only a slight cough to go with the runny nose. His appetite's better than Mark's too. Mark's progressed to drinking juice eagerly, and asking for 'cookies' (triscuits), but tends to only nibble at the edges or leave them on the floor, to my displeasure. ::fond/exasperated sigh::BarrayaransZodlings!
Yesterday was the last day to turn in the final exam. The final's grades were automatically calculated by the UMUC test software, but I don't know how the prof handles computing the final course grade. Hopefully they'll post grades by the end of the week.
