sethrakBuying Mother's Day cards can be a rather emotionally fraught experience when one's relationship with said mother is somewhat less than stellar.
Might do a thinky/unpacking post on some of what came bubbling up later.
Currently reading some ofsynecdochic's links on how women are, at least in our culture, taught to not own their own awesomeness, and the emotional poisoning this causes women and society. A few commenters on the linked-to posts mention that not all cultures are as comfortable with being open about accomplishments as Americans are. A few others point out that while, yes, this is a cultural difference, nonetheless even in cultures where 'everyone' is supposed to self-deprecate accomplishments, men are held to a different standard of how proud they dare be than women are.
I don't have a lot to contribute to the discussion in terms of my own thinky-thoughts. I just find the discussion fascinating; wish for my admittedly small circle of internet friends to read and think about it; and agree that women do need to work on standing up for ourselves and stop being afraid to own our own accomplishments. There's a difference between bragging and simply saying "Yes, I did do that well, thank you". We need to start doing the latter.
