Buying Mother's Day cards can be a rather emotionally fraught experience when one's relationship with said mother is somewhat less than stellar.

Might do a thinky/unpacking post on some of what came bubbling up later.

Currently reading some of [personal profile] synecdochic's links on how women are, at least in our culture, taught to not own their own awesomeness, and the emotional poisoning this causes women and society. A few commenters on the linked-to posts mention that not all cultures are as comfortable with being open about accomplishments as Americans are. A few others point out that while, yes, this is a cultural difference, nonetheless even in cultures where 'everyone' is supposed to self-deprecate accomplishments, men are held to a different standard of how proud they dare be than women are.

I don't have a lot to contribute to the discussion in terms of my own thinky-thoughts. I just find the discussion fascinating; wish for my admittedly small circle of internet friends to read and think about it; and agree that women do need to work on standing up for ourselves and stop being afraid to own our own accomplishments. There's a difference between bragging and simply saying "Yes, I did do that well, thank you". We need to start doing the latter.
