The best description of carbonoffsetting by the rich, ever: "Carbon-offsetting, the newly fashionable practice of compensating for one’s own carbon emissions by paying into a fund to reduce them elsewhere, may be better than nothing, but to some it sounds too much like rich men paying others to take their place in the draft during the Civil War. "

From today's online issue, in an article on Live Earth.

Heh. Even broken clocks are right twice daily. I still prefer the term "indulgences," personally . . . the giving of alms to offset sin. Though that may just be my Catholic upbringing asserting itself. Still, it's amusing watching the Church of Gaia form. They're already trying to purge the scientific community of heresy, never mind that *MARS* is also experiencing global warming . . .

I know of at least one blogger who tried to come up with a stunt that would do more environmental damage than Live Earth--and couldn't come up with anything that even several thousand non-millionaires could do without breaking either the bank or the law. :)
