Jul. 1st, 2006 11:55 amThere are occasions when I think I need to shop around for a new religion.
I get the daily NYTimes headlines delivered to my inbox. Today's batch included a piece on a senior Vatican official who plans to reccomend to the Pope that scientists engaging in stem cell research be included in the list of automatic excommunicates.
This, while depressing, didn't surprise me overmuch.
What did surprise me, but probably shouldn't have, is that women who get abortions are also automatically excommunicated. Apparently without exception.
What's a woman with an ectopic pregnancy supposed to do then? Or such severe blood pressure problems that she can't carry to term even though she probably desperately wants to?
There are medically sound reasons for having abortions, you assholes. ::glares in the general direction of the Vatican::

Date: 2006-07-01 09:05 pm (UTC)I know what you mean. I'm always really reluctant to tell people I'm a Christian (see, I even had this pause before typing that word) because of all the shit associated with it. Well, that, and given the way I think and act and talk makes people think otherwise. But it's really, really difficult to watch people of faith spend more time abolishing and abhorring than caring and nurturing. People spend way, way too much time condemning things when they should be spending time being understanding. Forcibly slicing people away from themselves is not going to open them to anything other than hate and distrust.
Frankly, it makes me sick.
