I am the Alakai Swamp on Mount Wai'ale'ale!
Which Extremity of the World Are You?
From the towering colossi at Rum and Monkey.

Belive it or not, I am spending my day off profitably, not just sleeping in til 11 and web-crawling. I've got a load in the dryer, another in the washer, and a third load already sorted and prepped for dumping in the washer when it's free.

Next on the agenda, scrubbing the bathroom. Then maybe I'll try playing the game I bought over the weekend. Last week I finally - and this is somewhat embarassing to admit - starting learning to use a PS2. Yes, I am a dork and a recluse and a borderline Luddite. :p Shut up. Went to Blockbuster, rented a likely-looking RPG called Rygar, and fiddled round with it. Not the most massively cool and leet game in the world, perhaps, but amusing. ^_^ Title character is some sort of gladiator, who is on a "never ending quest to save my girlfriend!". Ok, not really, he just reminds me of a less flamboyantly gay version of the Link rip-off from "Drawn Together" on Comedy Central. The opening movie sequences made that abundantly clear. They also made me a bit dubious about the box's claims that the game was well-grounded in Greek mythology, but I'll let that slide for now.

Basically, in the backstory, he tromps round defeating evil and cheering up a princess. First scene, princess is trying to award Rygar for something or other in a vast stadium. Alas and alack, she gets kidnapped by the Titans, who rampage their way into the stadium for no readily apparent reason, kill lots of people, and render Rygar unconcious. He goes floating down through a vast white void - reminding me of LHOD, oddly enough - and some goddess or minor deity, who never gives her name, asks him to take on a quest to kick Titan arse. He pompously declares that he will always seize the chance to fight evil. Goddess verbally pats him on the head for being a good boy, then gives him the "Diskarmor". Looks like a massive shield, which attachs to his arm with a chain. He can flick it out with great speed at anything in his way, and as it goes flying, blades open out all along the perimeter of the shield, causing major damage.

There are some seriously cool effects that you can achieve with this thing. I therefore forgive the game designers for the dorky name. :D I was able to grab one of the massive carnivorous centipede-things, whirl it through the air, crash its carcass into the walls half a dozen times, and whap another centipede to death with it, in less than thirty seconds. :D The graphics during this bit were fantastic.

Yes, I know, I'm enjoying that more than a self-described pacifist should. ^_^; I wouldn't enjoy killing *real* living creatures.

I liked the rented game so much, that I ended up buying it used at EB Games. Gotta love that used-game discount card I bought in Dec. I've used it three times, and the savings have already made up for the five bucks the card cost me.

I haven't played the bought game yet. No time. I'm hoping the game documentation, which the rental lacked, will help me get a better grasp on what the heck is going on. The opening sequences were great on visual and aural quality, but short on explaining what's going on.

For example, at one point my character found a nifty looking object. Upon acquisition, the item was named as a "Shard of the Future" or something like that, and I was told that now something in the future has been changed.

"Nani?!" was my clever response.

Nothing in the game this far had said anything about trying to fix errors in the flow of time. I was a most confused little dragon.

We'll see what happens.
