We should have named that child Calvin
Oct. 28th, 2008 04:25 pmThe trip to the audiologist was a bust.
Mark would not sit in my lap in the little testing room, nor stand still while I gently wrapped my arms around him, for the initial "Can the kid respond to light-up and noise-making toys to the left, center, and right?" test.
The part where they were supposed to stick a tiny little thing in his ear that would make noise, connected by a cord to a larger doohickey that clipped to his shoulder?
::face-palm:: Dear God.
Among other things, he nearly took out my upper front teeth with his head-thrashing. Didn't respond to being sung to. Didn't respond to the audiologist blowing bubbles to amuse him. Just screamed and flailed and carried on like a wildman, despite me restraining his limbs. She said normally kids calm down once they hear the music in the little earpiece, but he wouldn't let her get it in at all.
So now we have to get a referral and an order for an "ABR with sedation", then make an appointment for it at CHKD. Basically, it's a mild sedative, that will make him take a nap, and they'll attach sensors to his forehead to monitor the nerve that processes sound.
We are distinctly unthrilled with this performance of his. But there's nothing to be done about it. We just have to wait til the referral goes through. Dr. Hines is on leave this week, so the nurse on duty said she'd see if one of the other doctors will give us the referral.
