253 to 254, bay-bayyyy!
Oct. 24th, 2004 09:26 pm(If you cannot grok the title, kindly reference my post of the 12th, whilst I run around the living room in a poli sci geek fit of squee-ness, frightening my kitten and worrying the neighbors.)
In other news, whilst getting certain legal matters squared away at the Sarpy Co. Courthouse Friday, I volunteered to be a polling place worker, since I happen to have Nov. 2 off.
I actually got in. I'm mildly amazed. :D The lady in charge said I was the answer to a prayer - NE law requires polls to be staffed by equal numbers of registered voters from the two main parties. One of her Dems at the Avery Presbyterian Church had had to cancel because of an injury, and she had been at something of a loss as to how to fill the gap.
I work from 8 am to 8 pm, setting up and taking down the poll. We're allowed to bring in food and use the church's kitchen facilities. I have a small stapled pile of paperwork to read, and an absentee ballot that I need to fill out tomorrow - I will be completely unable to attend my own polling place as a result of this.
I even get paid - $5.15 an hour. I hadn't expected that at all. I thought poll staff were unpaid volunteers, hence the preponderance of older and retirement age people who take on the job.
I'd have been *thrilled* to take on the job for free, frankly. I haven't had this much fun since the Garvey/Lawton governor campaign.
