Paranoid Little Dragon is paranoid
But sometimes paranoia is a useful survival response, or at least coping mechanism for stress.
So!
Current contents are pretty barebones, just what we needed for Saturday's trip to the zoo, plus a couple things I added yesterday in a fit of "ZOMG What if the fire leaps across I25 overnight and blasts across the entire city?! What if some doucheweasel drops a lit cigarette out the window while driving along 94 and all those tinder dry horse grazing fields go up?!"
Waterproof changing pad.
Gallon ziplock bag containing five Jack size pullups. (We're running damn low, I need to drag my no-longer deathly-ill ass to the Commissary later to get more. Tom is unavailable for now.)
Gallon Ziplock with a supply of Mark's underwear.
Wipes.
Tupperware with some of the boys' favorite flavor of Fruit Thins.
Sunblock, plastic baggies for wet/dirty items.
Needs to contain:
More sunblock.
A bottle of Zyrtec for Mark.
My prozac.
Simple first aid kit.
Spare change of clothes for both boys.
Spare socks and underwear for me and Tom.
Water bottles.
Copies of our vital records, preferably in a ziplock.
More snacks for the boys.
A couple of their fave DVDs and the portable player.
In addition, go bags for me and Tom, in case we get pre-evac status (God I sincerely hope not), and more bottled water than the half-empty carton currently in my trunk. And the laptop and its battery and charging cord, should we switch to full evac. ::frets::
Three full changes of clothes for me and Tom. My sewing kit and current cross-stitch project. The ipods and their chargers. The laptop bag and the old laptops. Probably one of the handguns and appropriate ammo, if we evac with Tom along, but he can choose that better than I possibly could. Non-perishable food for the boys. Scissors. Pocket knife. Bubbles and other small toys for the boys. Maybe our framed wedding photos if we can fit it in the trunk.*Maybe*-maybe the giant book of dvds - laptop can play them.
There's plenty of other things I'd love to take - my books! my cross stitch and sewing supplies! - but realistically, when you consider what can actually fit in the reduced trunk area of a hybrid Civic, and what is likely to be useful at a shelter vs. what they can provide vs. what you merely WANT to have.... And when you want to be able to load the car and get the fuck OUT, fast...... the list slims way down. We're not talking end of the world, flee to south east Missouri ahead of the zombie hordes and bring every irreplaceable thing you can cram into the vehicle. Or nuclear winter end of the world where you cram every possible thing you think you'll need into your domicile and hunker down.
Tom came home for lunch and said he had the official word already that his leave next week was cancelled. He's been temporarily loaned to another unit and expects to be operating under near-deployment conditions for the duration.
It could be far worse. We went to the home of one of his superiors last summer for a going-away party - gorgeous house, and the backyard, while steep enough for mountain goats, had a path leading to a tiny patio overlooking the entire city and a good way onto the plains.
He's deployed. Wife, kid, and dog are still here. Their house was one of the ones destroyed last night. The family's ok, but damn. :(
